Sa Fonda Deià

Speaking of worldly pleasures, there is a special place in Deià where the atmosphere is vibrant once the sun goes down. Live music, open mic nights, jam sessions and cocktails are what Sa Fonda is all about in the summer months. This cult bar, an informal café during the day, comes alive by night, and is the place where the myth of Deià as the centre of bohemia was forged, both by the anonymous free spirits and the legendary artists who flocked to it.

At Sa Fonda, Kevin Ayers, Mike Oldfield, Sting, Kate Moss, Richard Branson, the Geldofs and the Gallaghers mingled in the crowd as live music and bohemian nights flowed. Legendary musicians and supermodels mingled with Hollywood actors and actresses. The drawing power of Deià’s bohemian nights translated into countless parties that made the village and Sa Fonda’s fame grow as the Serra de Tramuntana’s best-known secret.

Sa Fonda, which began in the 1950s as the “Coll Guest House”, later became the regular dwelling place of such well-known personalities as the American film actor Charlton Heston, the German psychedelic painter Mati Klarwein and the British musician Kevin Ayers. Live music nights have served as an attraction there since the late 1980s, when the Sa Fonda café became a sort of second “town square”.

All things must pass, said George Harrison but Sa Fonda stands the test of time and has lost none of its charm for the curious, who see that the bar continues to maintain a lively calendar of events.
