The quiet charm of Deià’s streets

Deià is certainly picturesque, with its steep cobbled streets and charming houses with natural stone façades, all of which add to the unique atmosphere that is immediately evident upon entering the village. There are numerous excursions that encourage us to explore this area of the island of Mallorca, either on foot or by bicycle. Located just 30 km from the capital, Deià is one of the most populated areas of the Serra de Tramuntana, yet it is never overrun by crowds of tourists milling about the village.

The circular route to Cala Deià is popular for its ease and short duration. Along this route we find the spectacular viewpoint of Sa Foradada, a popular gathering point for tourists and locals alike, especially during the summer months just before sunset. But there are many other viewpoints and interesting routes in the mountains around Deià, some of which can be much more of a challenge.

However, no effort at all is needed to fall under the charm of the small coastal village of Deià. Vía Lluís Salvador is possibly one of the most frequented streets for those who like to stroll and admire the town. As such, you may come across the former home of Curtis Roosevelt, the eldest grandson of US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1987, he and his wife Marina moved to Deià, where he devoted himself to pottery. Some of his work was exhibited in art galleries in Palma.

Not surprisingly, this little paradise on earth is visited every year by numerous travellers from all over the world. Perhaps the most appreciated advantages of this beautiful destination are the unrivalled views of the mountains and the sea, and its relative proximity to the capital of Mallorca.

Es Forn, located in the heart of Deià, is a family establishment, and the reference store of the village, offering a large selection of fresh products and delicacies. But all around the centre of Deià the coolest souvenirs can be bought, as you wander through its narrow cobbled streets, dotted with elegant boutiques, art galleries and craft shops.
