The Miramar Monastery, located within one of the oldest rural estates of Mallorca, Son Marroig, is another must-see on any tour of the Tramuntana mountain range. The monastery’s beautiful architecture stands amidst paths leading to playful belvederes offering spectacular views. Inside, there are mementos of Archduke Ludwig Salvator, who bought the place in 1872 and transformed it considerably, as well as valuable paintings by Joan Bauçà and Joaquim Mir.
The building was founded by Ramon Llull in 1276 as a monastery and school of Eastern languages, so that the monks could learn Arabic and prepare themselves to go and evangelise the Moors. After passing into other hands in 1487, the island’s first printing press was set up, marking a milestone in the history of Mallorca.
Despite currently being a private property, the building houses a museum dedicated to Ramon Llull and the Archduke Ludwig Salvator that is open to visitors. It preserves, among other things, the original monastery floors, the monks’ kitchen, and the statue of a virgin in Carrara marble, a gift from the Empress Sissi.
The complete collection includes Phoenician, Greek and Roman pottery, among other pieces of significant historical and cultural value.
