This excursion is a “classic” among the tours around the island of Mallorca. Year after year, groups of locals and tourists gather at the Son Marroig viewpoint from where Sa Foradada can be seen, and marvel at yet another breathtaking sunset.
The descent to the peninsula is not difficult at all, and allows visitors to save their strength for the uphill return. As the route is well signposted, this hike is ideal for a family outing, as it allows for stops along the way for refreshments and taking in the beautiful scenery.
Daredevils will want to climb to the top of the rocky silhouette of the peninsula, a fun adventure that can take up to half an hour, depending on each person’s ability.
Sa Foradada is known for offering the most beautiful sunsets on the island, and for being the place where the poet Jacinto Verdaguer found the inspiration for his work “Atlántida”. The peninsula of Sa Foradada (literally “the holed one”), 70 metres high, has a huge hole of 18 metres in diameter, allowing the sun’s rays to pass over the horizon, off the coast.
The whole area is truly impressive, a must-see on the route along the west coast of Mallorca. It was documented with scientific precision by Archduke Ludwig Salvator in his 1984 book “Die Balearen”, revealing his strong fascination for the Balearic archipelago, and for Sa Foradada in particular.
The Archduke was, and still is to this day, one of the best-known and most admired figures of the XIX century Mallorcan society.
